THIS SONG IS ABOUT ABNER LOIUMA, A HAITIAN IMMIGRANT NOW SUING THE CITY OF NEW YORK CLAIMING HE WAS VICIOUSLY BEATEN AND SODOMIZED BY NEW YORK CITY POLICE OFFICERS - IT'S JUST ONE OF A GROWING NUMBER OF CHARGES OF POLICE BRUTALITY IN THE UNITED STATES.


Pierre Sané:
"We receive regular reports of police using excessive force in arresting people - Incidents of torture and ill treatment in police stations. Suspects being beaten up after having been restrained, unjustified shooting of suspects in the streets, and most disturbing of all, people dying while in the custody of police."


THE ABUSES INCLUDE: THE EXCESSIVE USE OF FORCE, THE SHOOTING OF UNARMED SUSPECTS, AND THE USE OF STUN WEAPONS, TEAR GAS AND PEPPER SPRAY ON PEACEFUL PROTESTERS.


Pierre Sané:
"The US government needs to increase the accountability of the police at national and at state level by implementing effective monitoring and tracking of police brutality cases."


Van Jones:
"The question is not, "Are all cops bad? Are all cops racist? The question is on this human system called law enforcement: Do we have adequate checks and balances to make sure that the police are obeying their own rules. Who is policing the police?"


Van Jones:
"Well the fact is that the United States tries to impose it's understanding of human rights on other countries, and yet is not upholding the basic standard of human rights inside the United States with regard to law enforcement brutality, to me means that yes, it's time for the international community to look within the borders of the United States and to start asking hard questions about why there is so much violence on the part of law enforcement here."
