AS VIOLATIONS IN PRISONS AND JAILS PERSIST, SO DOES THE RELENTLESS USE OF THE ULTIMATE AND IRREVERSIBLE SANCTION A STATE CAN ADMINISTER - THE DEATH PENALTY

THERE HAVE BEEN OVER 180 STATE ADMINISTERED EXECUTIONS SINCE 1996 WITH OVER THREE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED PRISONERS STILL ON DEATH ROW.

A NATIONAL MOVEMENT FOR THE ABOLITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY IS GROWING--INCREASINGLY LED BYFAMILIES OF MURDER VICTIMS. PEOPLE LIKE MARIA HINES--SEEN HERE ON A VIGIL PROTESTING THE EXECUTION OF THE MAN CONVICTED OF MURDERING HER BROTHER.

Bill Schultz:
"Its not a coincidence that most of those countries with the lowest murder rates are countries that do not have the death penalty. That's no coincidence. The fact is that just as we don't steal from the thief, or rape the rapist, or torture the torturer in retaliation - we ought not to kill the killer."

AMNESTY SAYS THE DEATH PENALTY IS SOMETIMES INFLICTED ON INNOCENT PEOPLE AND HAS SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE SHOWING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN THE IMPOSITION OF THE DEATH SENTENCE.
